The JOSÉ LUIS GUARNER CRITIC’S AWARD
MÉLIÈS D’ARGENT AWARD

 

FANTÀSTIC OFFICIAL SECTION

 

The Jury of the Fantàstic Official Section of the 30th edition of the SITGES Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya, formed by Piper Laurie (United States), Elio Quiroga (Spain), Pere Ignasi Fages (Spain), Eliseo Subiela (Argentina) and Alan Jones (Great Britain),

has decided to give the following awards:

Best Short film:

HOW WINGS ARE ATTACHED TO THE BACK OF ANGELS by Craig Welch

With this award, the Jury also wishes to recognise the continuous work of the National Film Board of Canada towards investigation and experimentation in film.

Best Special Effects:

Industrial Light and Magic for SPAWN

Best Soundtrack:

Michael Nyman for GATTACA

Best Cinematography:

Javier Aguirresarobe for 99.9

Best Script:

Naomi Wallace for LAWN DOGS

Best Actress:

Reese Witherspoon for FREEWAY

Best Actor:

Sam Rockwell for LAWN DOGS

Best Director:

Scott Reynolds for THE UGLY

Best Film:

GATTACA by Andrew Niccol

The jury also wishes to express its conformity with the Festival’s new formula that at the same time, combines the permanence of a genuine Fantasy Film Festival, with a broader and more generalised modality, which is the SITGES International Film Festival of Catalonia.

 

GRAN ANGULAR OFFICIAL SECTION

 

The recount of all votes cast by audiences attending films from the official GRAN ANGULAR section, sponsored by CINEMANÍA, has produced the following results:

Best Actor:

SERGI LÓPEZ for WESTERN

Best Actress:

KATE BECKINSALE for SHOOTING FISH

Best Director:

STEFAN SCHWARTZ for SHOOTING FISH

Best Film:

KNOCKIN’ ON HEAVEN’S DOOR by Thomas Jahn

 

ANIMA’T SECTION: BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM

 

The jury of the ANIMA’T section of the 30th edition of SITGES 97 Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya formed by Tyron C. Montgomery (Germany), Marv Newland (Canada) and Begoña Vicario (Spain) has selected as finalists the following short films:

Rubicon,

A l’ombre,

The Mermaid,

Death and the Mother

DNA

and has decided to give the award for the best animation short to:

DNA by Giorgio Valentini

which deals with such an outstanding subject as genetic manipulation and that through it bounds together ethics, religion and science, using an interesting narrative structure and large doses of irony and humour.

 

 

 

The JOSÉ LUIS GUARNER CRITIC’S AWARD

 

The jury at the 4th José Luis Guarner Critic’s Award, called together by the l’Associació Catalana de Crítics i Escriptors Cinematogràfics, and formed by Lluís Bonet Mojica, Ignasi Juliachs, Imma Merino, Casimiro Torreiro and Josep Torrell, awards the prize to:

TREN DE SOMBRAS by José Luis Guerin

 

 

 

 

 

MÉLIÈS D’ARGENT AWARD

 

The jury of the Silver Méliès d’Argent Award for the 30th edition of SITGES 97 Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya, formed by Jordi Costa, Esteve Riambau and Antonio Trashorras has unanimously decided to award the prize to the best European fantasy film to:

TREN DE SOMBRAS by José Luis Guerin

This film will compete for the Méliès d’Or award the 13th of December in Porto (Portugal).
