| This coming October, from the 9th to the 19th, Sitges
will once more become the film capital of the world. A
hundred films of different genres; two official sections,
one dedicated to fantasy film and the other to films in
general; six screening areas with a capacity of 3,000;
with well-known figures from the world of cinema present
(actors, directors, producers, screenwriters etc.); Seven
Chances; the Catalan Audiovisual Congress; a session from
the European Eureka programme, and a genuinely
captivating atmosphere make the Sitges Festival an
unmissable event for all movie lovers. This year the Sitges Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary and it's marking the event with a new leap forward which is enabling it to widen its appeal and its impact. The Sitges Festival is now called The International Film Festival of Catalonia and promises to bring the best cinema to a setting that is truly evocative and attractive. | The SITGES’97: Festival Internacional de
Cinema de Catalunya have just been born.
Its arrival coincides with the thirtieth edition of what
until now has been called the Festival Internacional
de Cinema Fantàstic de Sitges. The same town, the
same team and the same enthusiasm that have consolidated
us as one of most successful annual events will
now be at the service of a bigger Festival that will
represent our country, opening new cinematic areas while
preserving most of the characteristics and sections that
have been our hallmark and guarantee of quality. The Festival will maintain its official competitive section for fantasy cinema as well as the sections designed to offer the best of the year’s animation, the retrospectives, and Seven Chances with its seven essential films, films which have no chance of being released in Spain, chosen by seven international critics. We will also continue with the task of recovering the complete works, scattered throughout the world, of the pioneer Segundo de Chomón. But that is not all, this year’s Festival introduces a new section for non-genre films that will give new life to the event and open up a new area for the promotion and knowledge of today’s cinema. Catalan audio-visuals will have their own section to show their development and annual production. Filmmakers, stars, the industry, critics and the public who have always been present in Sitges in massive numbers will continue to have an unmissable date in October with the best atmosphere, the best facilities and a unique combination of celebration and professionalism. Our only reason for being is the Cinema! And cinema has many reasons for being at SITGES’97: the International Film Festival of Catalonia! Àlex Gorina Festival Director |
